Crime Prevention

At the Brockton Police Department we use the Crime Prevention Triangle. This concept simply states that in order for a crime to occur all three of these triangles elements must exist:
Desire, Ability, & Opportunity
If we can eliminate any one of these elements a crime can not occur.

Let's take a quick look at each of these elements.

1.  Desire
The desire of a criminal to commit a crime.
We as citizens can not effect or remove a criminals desire to commit a crime. If someone really wants to commit a crime they will

2.  Ability
The Criminals ability to commit a crime.
We can not effect the ability of a criminal to commit a crime. They will find a way.  They can be thousands of miles away, use telephones, internet…
Not even physical impairment will stop some from committing crimes.

3.  Opportunity
The criminals opportunity to commit crimes.
This is where we can take action to prevent crime.  By removing the opportunity for crime to occur we have broken the “Crime Prevention Triangle”.

The pages listed above in this section of our website outline steps we as citizens can take to remove this opportunity.

Car Thefts

Don't let you car end up like these:

It is against the law to leave your car running unattended.

Too many cars are being stolen because owners are letting there cars warm up with the keys inside, or running into a store or coffee shop for just a second and leaving the car running.
It only takes seconds to steal a car without keys.
Car thieves really appreciate it when you give them
the keys and warm the car up for them.
