OUR MISSION

The mission of the Brockton Police Department is to enforce the law, protect life, and serve our residents by engaging in proactive problem-solving. We serve to link residents and businesses to City resources to reduce crime, the fear of crime, and social disorder to promote a better quality of life for all.

The mission is a commitment to quality performance from all members. It is critical that all members understand, accept, and be aligned with the responsibilities established by this mission. It provides the foundations upon which all operational decisions and organizational directives will be based. Directives include regulations, operating instructions, policies, procedures and practices.

This mission represents the commitment of this administration to the concepts of quality performance management. In other words, members are expected to work consistently in a quality manner in the daily performance of those duties, job responsibilities and work tasks associated with this mission. Quality manner means that performance outcomes comply with the performance standards established for this agency and for each member. Examples of performance standards include policies, procedures, directives, general and supervisory orders, work productivity and performance behavior.

Each member of the department is required to accept the responsibility for the achievement of this mission and the concepts of quality service

The PATCH

The following might give you just a brief history regarding the prominent symbols shown on the emblem worn by our officers.

A part of the design is taken from the City Seal, which was adopted on July 4, 1882. An officer from our Department, Lieutenant Raymond Lofstrom, who is since retired, designed the emblem itself.

In the year 1649, the Indians originally deeded the lands presently occupied by the City of Brockton to Myles Standish and John Alden. In 1700, settlers came into the area to establish a new parish, which included all of the Bridgewater’s. In 1821 inhabitants of the northern section of Bridgewater founded their own town called North Bridgewater, which on May 5, 1874 changed its name to Brockton. It became incorporated as a City on April 9, 1881, the year in which Brockton’s first police department was established with the appointment of a City Marshal. Two assistant marshals and four policemen were appointed to assist the City Marshal, thus beginning the Brockton Police Department.

The picture in the center of the emblem shows Chief Massasoit giving the deed to the whole area, including the part, which later became Brockton, to Captain Myles Standish at a location known as Sachem Rock. The total value of numerous articles, which were exchanged for the property, amounted to approximately $30.00. The beehive at the top of the emblem represents ‘Industry’. Brockton has always been famous for its fine shoes manufactured here, and sold throughout the United States and the world. Brockton made shoes were also made for servicemen in all branches of service of the United States.

To the right side of the insignia, there is a picture of a light bulb. This depicts `Progress’, as Brockton is known for the many ‘firsts’ accomplished by our City. Brockton holds the reputation of being the first city in the country to operate street-cars by electricity. In this connection is the record also of being the first city using electrical power for municipal lighting. When in 1883, underground conduits were constructed, Mr.Thomas Alva Edison, himself, came to Brockton to superintend this important work. We were also the first city to have an electronic fire alarm system. To the left of the insignia, is a picture of a globe denoting ‘Education’. Brockton is well known for its fine school system which was established as early as 1746 when we were still part of the Bridgewater’s, and still continues to the present time.

We hope you will find the foregoing information both interesting and helpful as we feel the significance in knowing what the insignia represents to our City as a whole adds to the interest of your collection.
